Vote for the Boat

We waited in trepidation; an unlikely group of all ages with a common interest; the River Tone Community Trip Boat. It was the day after the big vote. Had we won?

We gathered at the Creech St Michael Pre-School Hut, at 5.45pm, to be in time for a live transmission on the ITV 6.00pm local news.

The outside broadcast unit was already there. We quizzed the cameraman but he either didn’t know or he wasn’t telling. He assured us that our competitors also had a film crew standing by.

6.00pm and someone said where’s the banner? Still in the car and minutes before we went live. A quick dash to the car, a rearrangement of the furniture and the people, and we were all ready, pressure mounting.

6.15pm and the camera was rolling, we were unaware. The door swung open and the presenter walked in, with a large roll in his hand – we knew – it was the cheque for £48,909!

The room erupted as cheers and celebrations broke out. What a relief!
